I wrote "Reach Your Hand Down" in memory of my
nephew, Ricky, who was killed in a drunk driving
accident in November of 2003. We were only 4
years apart in age, so we grew up more like siblings.
He was a great kid, really funny, always quick with a
sarcastic comment and a smile. He was also a
musician--a drummer--and he had plans to study
music industry in college. He played in a band with
his friends and had a recording studio. And I really
miss him. I never even knew how talented he
thought I was until someone told me after he passed
away that he used to tell them all the time what a
great voice I had. And so one night, I was stuck in
traffic on my way home and the chorus of this song
just came to me. It was effortless, and I feel like it
was some kind of collaboration between us across
time and space. And now I see how many other
people are touched by this song and I realize how
similar we all are. We all experience love and
happiness and loss and pain. This song for me will
always be about Ricky. And this page is to
remember how much everyone who knew him loved
him. But I give this song out to all of you and hope it
brings you comfort.
